Public spaces aren’t public until women feel safe in them.
The Space for Her campaign is an amalgamation of a research report, audio visual presentations and implementable design tools that highlights the pain points. The idea is to use design tools and key recommendations to imagine and facilitate inclusive public spaces for women in Delhi. Desmania Designed for Good partnered with PVR Nest for this project, building on their existing body of work towards women empowerment, in association with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Insight & Strategy
Challenge
We found that broken pavements, low lighting, lack of access to clean public toilets or clear signages are some of the many problems that hinder women’s access to public spaces. The idea behind the Space For Her project was very simple, to ensure that existing spaces like Anupam PVR Saket can be redesigned -- using simple measures – to make them inclusive for women and encourage them to stay out longer.
Approach
We identified the problems women faced in a public space through a series of survey, in-person interviews and focus group discussions -- using tools like sensorial mapping, user journey experience charts and free flowing discussions. We got insights about behavior, temperament, reservations and preferences of women in public space and were able to highlight a set of localized and implementable design tools. The research report is further designed to look at public spaces through the five senses, smell, taste, touch, sound and sight along with the sixth sense. Corresponding to the quantitative and qualitative data, a set of case studies are used to substantiate the importance of each sense and how they can affect our perspective and experience of a public space.

Impact
With this project we were able to give reasonable and implementable recommendations to the MCD and PVR Nest to make PVR Anupam Saket an inclusive spot for women. Some of the recommendations include levels of lighting, a toilet पास for better access to clean washroom and clear signages for better navigation among others to positively impact a woman’s urban experience.
