Insight & Strategy

Challenge

Issues around Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management range from taboos associated with menstruation, restrictive norms and practices, poor or difficult access to Water Sanitation and Health facilities, and poor access to sanitary products. These challenges further have a significant impact on access to education opportunities for young girls, with violation of rights such as the right to equality, health and dignity.

Around 500 million women along the length and breadth of the world do not have access to private spaces and menstrual products to manage periods in a dignified manner. Impending silence, restrictive sociocultural norms and taboos around menstruation further aggravate this problem and often girls tend to drop out of formal education.

Approach

UNESCO New Delhi in association with P&G Whisper India has developed five modules that cover key aspects of menstrual health and hygiene management. Each module is an insight to how education can uplift the girl student and the knowledge of correct practices can help keep them in schools. It also suggests that the governmental and non- governmental interventions focus on creating an environment of raising awareness about a range of menstrual products, issues regarding the products and how to deal with changing. Factoring in their pros and cons can offer an agency to the girl students to choose the menstrual products that best suit their context and give them the confidence to step out in the public sphere.

Impact

In collaboration with Snow Leopard pictures, we created a package of five module videos, one period anthem and two case study videos that highlighted the importance of Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management for the campaign. Additionally, UNESO New Delhi launched the teaching-learning modules on five thematic areas which include disabilities, gender, teachers and educators, young adults and nutrition, along with a comprehensive National Survey and Gap Analysis report on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM) under the initiative #KeepGirlsinSchool.
